What to do with car transmission problem?

I had some problem with transmission in my Honda Civic 1992 car (KBB value around $1500). I took the car to the mechanic. He checked it and asked for $400 just to see if the transmission is the issue. Then he says to fix the transmission it will cost me $2000. He said he won鈥檛 charge me $400 for the diagnostics if I donate the car to him since the car is not worth it. HE asked me over the phone if I could donate the car.

I told him to take the car but told him that he will have to wait for the title since my uncle owns the car. Now I asked my friends about the situation. They told me if I buy a used transmission it won鈥檛 cost me much. Now I went ahead and bought the transmission from the junkyard for $250. Thinking that he will charge me and put the transmission back in the car, but he already fixed the car on his own without waiting for the title. Now what are my rights in this case? I called him; he talked to me for a while and hung up on me several times. HE was telling that he spent thousands of dollars on stuff. But shouldn鈥檛 he have waited for the title? What should I do?What to do with car transmission problem?
Call the local police dept and tell them you need a civil standby. If you didn't sign anything telling him to do any work or giving him the car, he just fixed it for you for free. Make sure you bring the title and your uncle if it is in his name.

Then take it to Aamco and make sure he did the work right. They usually don't charge for a diagnostic. What to do with car transmission problem?
Well you really have a legal problem here. Yes the title is in your name. But technically, the two of you have a contract. Verbal contracts are still legitimate contracts. He would have a fairly believable case that he wouldn't have repaired the vehicle had you not agreed to give it to him.

On the flip side, if this did go to court, you could ask exactly what he did to the transmission. If it didn't come close to the $2,000 he quoted you, then you could maintain that he obtained your consent to donate based on a fraudulent estimate.

Rather than go to court on this, try to strike a deal with him and get some cash from him. He doesn't want to go to court over this because he's going to look like a crook. Of course, you're not going to look so great either after first donating and then try to get out of your promise. What to do with car transmission problem?
